Movement control

Since 23 September 2026 the movement of all cloven-hoofed animals (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and game) and their products is suspended countrywide, and all imports and exports of cloven-hoofed animals and their products are suspended until further notice. Auctions have been cancelled. Follow the Directorate of Veterinary Services' Veterinary Public Notification for the detailed control measures.

Commercial farm in the FMD-free zone, found by routine surveillance and confirmed by the Central Veterinary Laboratory, Windhoek. The farm has not been published: it is somewhere in the Karasburg State Veterinary District (tens of thousands of km², reaching the Orange River). The dot is Karasburg town and the circle only marks the general area.

How to read this map

  • Red means a laboratory (such as the Central Veterinary Laboratory in Windhoek) has confirmed FMD.
  • Orange means a suspected case, still waiting for a lab result. It was reported by a verified vet, or reported by a farmer with photos and checked by a verified vet. If the lab result is negative, the dot is removed.
  • To protect farmers, no farm names are shown. Every dot is moved to the middle of a grid square about 10 km across. When an official announcement names only a veterinary district, the dot has a dashed circle to show the approximate area.
  • Only registered veterinarians, checked by hand, can publish or verify a report.

Signs of FMD

Fever, blisters on the tongue, gums, feet and teats, drooling, lameness and a sudden drop in milk. Sheep and goats often show milder signs. If you suspect FMD, do not move animals. Call your State Veterinarian immediately.
